Flame-Retardant Plastic CNC Machining

Precision CNC machining of flame-retardant plastics and high-performance polymers for industrial, electronics, medical, aerospace, and transportation applications. From prototypes to repeat production, PlasticCNCPro helps you turn drawings and 3D models into dependable FR plastic components with consistent dimensional accuracy and material traceability.

Why Flame-Retardant Plastics

Flame-retardant (FR) polymers reduce ignition risk, self-extinguish, and limit flame spread—critical for components near heat sources, electrical assemblies, and enclosed machinery. Selecting the right FR grade can improve safety and compliance while maintaining mechanical, electrical, and chemical performance.

  • UL 94 V-0 or 5VA flame ratings for safety and regulatory requirements
  • Higher heat resistance and lower smoke/toxicity compared to commodity plastics
  • Electrical insulation, dielectric strength, and arc resistance
  • Stable dimensions under temperature and load
  • Replacement parts for equipment where flammability ratings are mandated

FR Materials We Machine

We regularly machine flame-retardant and high-temperature polymers. Typical options include:

PEI (Ultem)

Inherently FR; high strength, dimensional stability, UL 94 V-0 at common thicknesses

PPSU / PSU

High heat resistance, hydrolytic stability, typically UL 94 V-0

PPS

Excellent chemical resistance and heat tolerance; commonly UL 94 V-0

PC FR Grades

Robust, impact-resistant, often UL 94 V-0

ABS FR Grades

Economical, strong, widely used in housings; FR formulations available

PBT/PET FR Grades

Good electrical properties; FR variants for connectors and terminals

Nylon PA6/PA66 FR

Improved flammability performance; consider moisture conditioning

PEEK FR Grades

High-performance, high-temperature, excellent wear; FR formulations available

PVDF

Good flame and chemical resistance; commonly UL 94 V-0

PAI (Torlon) FR

Very high temperature and stiffness; FR options

PTFE

Excellent chemical and high-temperature performance with self-extinguishing behavior

Filled / Antistatic FR

Glass-fiber, mineral-filled, ESD-safe formulations

Note: UL 94 ratings (HB, V-2, V-0, 5VA) depend on material grade and part thickness. We can source grades with the required listing and provide material certificates upon request. Mechanical and machining behavior varies widely among FR polymers — our team can recommend material-selection trade-offs.

Machining Capabilities for FR Plastics

We focus on dimensional consistency and surface quality in FR plastics, which can be more abrasive or notch-sensitive than standard grades.

Semiconductor & Automation

Sensor mounts, fixture plates, tooling components

Medical & Laboratory

Instrument housings, sample holders, insulating parts

Aerospace & Defense

Interior components, protective covers

Transportation

Enclosures and insulated parts in vehicles and machinery

Pumps, Valves, Fluid

Components requiring FR and chemical resistance (PPS, PVDF)

Design and DFM Guidance for FR Plastics

Fillets and Radii

Add generous internal radii to reduce notch sensitivity and stress concentration.

Wall Thickness

Avoid ultra-thin walls; check UL 94 rating at intended thickness.

Heat Management

FR materials can still soften; distribute heat and avoid sharp thermal gradients.

Threads

Use coarse profiles; consider metal inserts for repetitive assembly or higher torque.

Holes and Slots

Maintain clearance to edges; avoid abrupt changes in section.

Residual Stress

Annealing may be beneficial for some high-performance polymers (PEI, PEEK, PPSU).

Moisture Control

Dry PA FR grades before machining; package parts effectively post-machining.
