What Is SAN and When to Use It
SAN (Styrene Acrylonitrile) is a rigid, transparent thermoplastic offering good dimensional stability and surface hardness with moderate chemical resistance. It's often chosen when you need clarity and better heat resistance than PS, without the cost of polycarbonate.
Key Properties (Grade-Dependent)
- Transparency and gloss: good optical clarity; can be polished to improve appearance
- Rigidity and dimensional stability: low creep, good stiffness
- Heat resistance: HDT typically around 90–105°C
- Electrical insulation: suitable for non-conductive components
- Chemical resistance: better than PS and ABS to aqueous acids/bases; limited resistance to alcohols, ketones, and aromatic solvents
- Impact resistance: lower than ABS and PC; SAN is relatively notch-sensitive
- Moisture absorption: low; usually stable in ambient conditions
When SAN Is a Good Fit
- • Transparent or semi-transparent covers, guards, panels, sight components in mild chemical environments
- • Rigid parts needing stable dimensions and clean aesthetics
- • Lab and appliance components where moderate heat resistance and clarity are useful
- • Cost-sensitive alternatives to PC with higher clarity than ABS
When to Consider Alternatives
- • High impact or safety-critical transparent parts → PC
- • Highest optical clarity and polishability → PMMA (Acrylic)
- • Better solvent resistance or wear → POM, PTFE, PPSU, PEEK
- • Tougher parts with better impact resistance → ABS or PC
