Why Nylon PA46

Exceptional Heat & Wear Performance

Nylon PA46 (Stanyl) is a high-crystallinity polyamide with outstanding heat resistance, strength, and wear performance versus standard nylons — ideal when PA6/PA66 cannot meet elevated temperature or long-term dimensional stability requirements.

+ Key Advantages

  • High temperature capability: Higher melting point and HDT than PA66; retains stiffness at elevated temperatures
  • Good dimensional stability: Lower creep and better property retention under heat load than standard nylons
  • Excellent wear & low friction: Suitable for gears, bushings, cams, and sliding elements
  • Chemical resistance: Good resistance to oils, greases, fuels, and many hydrocarbons
  • Moisture behavior: Absorbs less moisture than PA6, improving dimensional stability
  • Cost-performance: Significantly lower cost than PEEK for high-temp, wear-critical parts

! Considerations

  • 1 Stock shapes (rod/plate) are less common than PA6/PA66 — check lead times early
  • 2 Notch sensitivity and brittleness in dry condition require sharp tools and controlled machining
  • 3 Moisture and conditioning can influence dimensions — plan tolerances accordingly
  • 4 Not ideal for hot-water/steam environments; consider PPSU/PEEK/PEI for continuous hydrothermal exposure

Material Grades

PA46 Grades We Machine

Broad grade coverage from unfilled to specialty formulations.

  • Unfilled PA46
  • Glass-fiber reinforced (30-50% GF) for higher stiffness
  • Lubricated / wear-optimized filled grades (PTFE, MoS2)
  • Flame-retardant PA46 (UL 94 V-0)
  • Antistatic or conductive grades
  • Color options: natural/off-white, black; others subject to availability
Note: Certification options include material certificates, RoHS/REACH declarations, and UL flammability rating documents. FDA/food-contact compliance is grade-specific.

Precision

Tolerances & Surface Finish

Achievable tolerances for PA46 in environment-controlled conditions with good fixturing.

Typical Tolerances

General features (<100 mm) ±0.05 to ±0.10 mm
General features (>100 mm) ±0.10 to ±0.20 mm
Holes and bores H7-H9 range
Threads Metric 6H, UNC/UNF
Surface finish (as-machined) Ra ~1.6-3.2 μm

Stability Notes

PA46 absorbs some moisture over time; dimensions can shift from dry-as-machined to equilibrium. Options:

  • Machine and ship dry-as-machined
  • Pre-condition at 23°C/50% RH and measure at equilibrium
  • Add humidity barrier packaging with desiccants
Tip: For tight assemblies, specify measurement condition on the drawing.
Design Guidance

Design-for-Machining for PA46

Optimize your PA46 parts for manufacturability and performance.

Radii & Edges

Avoid sharp internal corners; use 0.5-1.0 mm fillets. Provide edge breaks (0.2-0.5 mm chamfer) to reduce chipping.

Wall Thickness

Keep walls ≥1.5-2.0 mm where possible; use ribs to reinforce instead of ultra-thin walls.

Gears & Wear Parts

Consider lubricated or GF grades; specify intended lubrication or dry-run conditions.
