PC-ABS CNC machined parts

Why Choose PC-ABS for Machined Parts

PC-ABS (Polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) blends the toughness and heat resistance of PC with the machinability and ductility of ABS. It is a versatile choice when you need strength, impact resistance, and dimensional stability in a single material.

High Impact Strength & Toughness

Superior impact resistance compared to ABS; excellent for housings, enclosures, and structural components.

Heat Resistance & Dimensional Stability

Better heat resistance than ABS (grade-dependent) with low warpage when machined correctly.

Balanced Stiffness & Ductility

Ideal for snap-fits and enclosures that need both rigidity and flexibility without cracking.

Stable Electrical Insulation

ESD-safe grades available for electronics handling and test fixtures in sensitive environments.

🧪

Flame-Retardant Grades (UL94 V-0)

Safety-critical designs meet rigorous fire-safety standards with specialized FR PC-ABS options.

🎨

Paintable & Bondable Surface

Good cosmetic potential with paintable and bondable surfaces for finished prototypes and production parts.

Consider PC-ABS when:

  • ABS is not tough or heat-resistant enough
  • PC alone may stress-crack or be cost-prohibitive
  • Nylon’s moisture absorption is a concern
  • You need robust housings, connectors, fixtures, guards, or functional prototypes before molding

If your application requires higher temperature or chemical resistance than PC-ABS can offer, we also machine PEI, PPSU, PPS, PEEK, PTFE, and other advanced polymers.

Our PC-ABS CNC Machining Capabilities

  • CNC milling: 3-axis and multi-axis for prismatic and complex geometries
  • CNC turning: bushings, spacers, fittings, and threaded components
  • Drilling, reaming, tapping, threading, counterboring, countersinking
  • Precision pocketing, slotting, contouring, engraving
  • Deburring and edge finishing suitable for functional and cosmetic parts

Typical Tolerances for Machined PC-ABS

General features±0.10 mm to ±0.20 mm
Critical bores and fitsup to ±0.05 mm feasible
Flatness and perpendicularityapplication-dependent

Achievable tolerances depend on material grade, part size, wall thickness, toolpath strategy, and fixturing. We collaborate early to balance tolerance, cost, and stability.

Lead Times

Prototypes: typically 5–10 working days after order confirmation

Design and Machining Guidelines for PC-ABS

To improve manufacturability, performance, and cost, follow these design considerations:

  • Wall thickness: aim for 2.0–4.0 mm for general housings; avoid ultra-thin walls below ~1.5 mm where possible
  • Fillets and radii: add internal corner radii ≥ tool radius to reduce stress and improve tool access
  • Bosses and ribs: use generous fillets and adequate base thickness to minimize stress concentrations
  • Threads: machined threads are feasible; for frequent assembly/disassembly, consider metal inserts
  • Holes and bores: allow for reaming where precise fits are required; specify fit class or mating component
  • Flatness: add ribs or increase thickness on large, thin panels; consider datum schemes that match function
  • Fixturing: design accessible datums and clamping features to reduce deformation during machining
  • Heat and chips: we optimize cutting parameters and chip evacuation to avoid melt and burrs
  • Coolants: we favor air or light mist; avoid aggressive chemicals that may induce stress cracking
  • Post-machining conditioning: stress-relief or controlled storage can stabilize tight-tolerance parts when required

Share your 3D model and 2D drawings early. We provide DFM feedback to help you hit performance targets without overengineering tolerances.

Surface Finish and Post-Processing

  • Machined finish: functional surfaces typically Ra ~1.6–3.2 µm; finer finishes possible on request
  • Deburring: manual and mechanical deburring with attention to edges and seal faces
  • Light bead finishing: possible at controlled pressures; we advise to prevent whitening
  • Engraving and marking: laser marking (grade-dependent), CNC engraving, ink markings
  • Assembly: integration of threaded inserts, gaskets, seals, standard hardware
  • Packaging: protective films, bubble wrap, custom trays, and export-ready cartons or crates

If painting or special coatings are required, we can support per project via controlled partners or customer-specified processes.

Quality Assurance and Documentation

  • Pre-production engineering review and material verification
  • In-process and final inspections per drawing and critical-to-quality features
  • Dimensional reports (FAI/inspection report), Certificates of Conformance
  • Material traceability and data sheets on request
  • RoHS/REACH compliance support where applicable
  • Custom gauges, go/no-go checks, and functional fit tests available by request

FAQs: PC-ABS CNC Machining

Can you hold ±0.05 mm on PC-ABS?

For critical features and suitable geometries, yes. We confirm feasibility during DFM and may recommend design tweaks, fixturing strategies, or stress-relief to ensure stability.

What surface finish can I expect on cosmetic faces?

Fine toolpaths can achieve attractive machined finishes. We can discuss polishing or controlled bead finishing; paint-ready preparation is available on request.

Do you supply flame-retardant or ESD-safe PC-ABS?

Yes. We can source FR (e.g., UL94 V-0) and ESD-safe grades and provide material documentation.

Will PC-ABS parts warp after machining?

With proper cutting parameters, support, and balanced material removal, warpage is minimized. For tight flatness, we may sequence operations, rest parts, or recommend ribs and thickness adjustments.

Are threaded inserts recommended?

For frequent assembly or higher clamp loads, metal inserts improve longevity. We can install heat-set or ultrasonic inserts, or machine threads directly for one-time assembly.

What is the typical lead time?

Prototypes usually 5–10 working days; production 10–20 working days depending on complexity, quantity, and inspection scope.

Can you help choose between PC-ABS and other materials?

Yes. We regularly compare PC-ABS with ABS, PC, Nylon, PEI, PPSU, PEEK, and others based on temperature, chemical resistance, stiffness, friction, and cost.
